Digital Leadership Portfolio

My entertainment journey started like many before me. I wanted to be a leading actor in Hollywood. The normal classes, workshops and auditions seemed boring and I wasn't comfortable socially enough to be critiqued regularly. I decided on dance training, a throwback to the Golden era of Hollywood and something good to put on a resume. I figured I'd be active and get public exposure. On screen I would like to have improved posture, social grace and a comfortable feeling in my own skin. I am naturally social awkward so I desired to turn it into a presence that would command a room. I applied for a teaching job at a Ballroom Dance Studio. After 25 years I’ve surpassed all my expectations! I've gone on to study Communication, Media, Theatre, Musical Theatre & Dance collegiately.
I'm Currently dancing 5 nights a week & teaching private clients. I continue with competitive training, pursue future dance certifications. More than anything, I am enjoying my classes in the Entertainment Business Masters program at Full Sail University!
The true secret to happiness lies in taking a genuine interest in all the details of daily life. -William Morris (Morris, 1834-1896).
As a dancer the earth is my drum and each step I take adds a new proficiency to my craft. Certifications are cool but not as cool as a library of performances. And that isn't as cool as teaching my clients. Even that isn't as cool as being an independent teacher. It fuels me with energy and passion, and I expect it to bounce me forward to accomplishing my life-long goals.

On a small or grand scale, self-discipline has been the Leadership factor that has helped me the most. As a young boy I was thankfully made accountable for my actions. Punishments were designed to instill self-reflection. I was reminded of the penalty the next time I faced a critical decision in judgement. This process helped, sometimes unknowingly to me, build self-discipline. Making my bed, cleaning my room, and doing the dishes became chores done with precision and care and in time I came to enjoy them. Yes, the alternative was bad, but I recognize the chance to change given to me by responsible parents. I tell the people closest to me that if it weren’t for discipline, I would have become a large ball of yellow snot. I took control over myself (Maxwell, p#185). Over the years I fashioned this into a healthy self-discipline.
Sports gave me ample chances to improve but school and music brought the most challenges. They came slowly for me and required me to consider the long-term mindset. I knew that my life was on course for great things if I made commitments. This is when I first accepted Robert Greene’s 29th Law of Power: Plan all the way to the end. My future projections had to allow for my learning style and adopt the concept of continual learning (Greene, p#239). It was in my professional career where self-discipline became integral. The years of apprenticeship instilled practice-practice-practice. A dance routine in front of a hundred people has a way of providing ample motivation for rehearsal. This parleyed into teaching commitments and consistency. I’ve been present and accountable to dance students for over 25 years by giving daily group classes and individualized training. I’ve had the opportunity to give instruction to personalities from artists to doctors. This provided to me the invaluable opportunity to learn about others along the way. Also, the chance to test behavior, customs and theories of engagement. This active-creative phase allowed me to glean from other’s charms. Propelled by a strong desire for authenticity, I developed my own style of teaching. This style integrates my easy-going nature mixed with my adherence to strict technique and bold assertions. I know that by doing small things I can do big things, that everything means everything and that there are no elevators to success. These are the reasons I focused on developing ways to get thick and heavy information content into the simple minds of a general audience. Not forgetting that my mind is and has always been the simple mind in new environments, whether intellectually or topographically. I’m reminded of the following wisdom, “If you can’t explain it simply, you don’t understand it well enough.”—Albert Einstein
Over many years I’ve continually to adhered to an established direction of passion through education. Two pivotal truths have served me well on this journey: One, I’ve taken to the skillset of learning how I learn and two, asking the right question and not giving up until I am satisfied with the answer. My competency on the piano was lackluster until I began to study music theory. Now, my understanding of music has exponentialized. My brain requires breaking down tasks into repeatable chunks. Then I continually repeat until the material is absorbed and ingested. The requirement that “Is often not recognized because it is wearing overalls and looks like work (Edison, 19??),” takes hours, days and years integrated into my daily schedule. Time management is integral. For example, I do piano fingering and unseam mending projects exercises while driving and at stop lights.
The Entertainment Business Master’s degree program at Full Sail is very engaging to me. It consistently challenges me to find new ways to be effective and masterful. My current profession revolves around a sales and service mindset. To this end I am dedicated to cultivating a stoic but more engaged listening style and becoming increasingly beneficial to the greatest number and variety of persons. In the past I’ve embraced charisma but have found that it is only appreciated in small portions and at the most peculiar of times. I will always continue to teach and learn to develop new analogies and practical elements. The sciences and mathematics of anatomy, geometry, and physics meet me in the synthesizing of information. Moving forward for me means thinking about the big picture, incorporating media outlets, and training others to be teammates as brothers and sisters.

“No artist retires: he can't.” -Thomas Edison
I chose this quote because I know the feeling of being on a ship set sail for an unknown destination; from which there is no turning back.
An artist's goal isn't only to accomplish a work or a set of works. An artist likes to forever explore art.
Upon Graduation from Fullsail University, Degree in tow, I would like to operate a production company as my overarching career goal. I expect to have full operation within 8-18 months. I’m currently doing buildouts to a rented office/studio space. I’m slowly but steadily compiling music equipment and the construction supplies needed to complete the project. I have a friend that will lend me a hand with the construction, another that will help with the electrical, and another that will walk me through the midi compatibility and other hardware to software connections.Because of my gratitude to all of Fullsail’s extra efforts to ensure my personal success I have proposed to record an original song for Full Sail and donate it to the University. To accomplish this successfully I will take the following steps. First, I’ll compose and write lyrics to an original melody. I’ll compose an original melody. I will write the musical score for the song. I will also write the musical score for a commercial spot. I will notate this song on a physical and pdf lead sheet. I’ll write the lyrical composition, and collaborate with others to add lyrics as well. There would be nothing better than to have upcoming artists add content to the project. In addition to my course classmates I can reach out to a Full Sail University Club. By attending a live event, a group online event, and an online club I can reach out to a large and complex student network. In fact it can have the scope of “We Are The World,” if that is in the best interest of the project and the University. I’ll mixdown and copy all digital formats required for editing and distribution including a radio commercial shortened “spot” version. I have collegiate experience using the mixdown feature in Adobe Editions. I am excited to revisit the software and sharpen my skill set in this medium. I’ll print 4 Original copies using a local Florida stamping company. I have made a useful contact on “The Space Coast” that presses copies of records. I would like to connect with and disclose this local startup’s information. I would work together to represent myself and Full Sail giving a local business strength in industry associations. I would like to donate 3 physically pressed copies to Full Sail University. I will donate a copy of the original lead sheets to Full Sail University. I’ll manage the project and the collaborations with classmates that will also be contributing lyrics. Next, for marketing purposes, I will create all the digital and print graphics and audio formats for the project and ensure that all print and audio legalities are in place. To ensure professional industry standards are met, I will negotiate for an official school/liaison relationship. I’ll work with a Full Sail liaison to stay within school policy and procedure. Considering the nature of modern music and current trends it’s necessary to keep a professional image for an institution of learning. All lyrics and musical styling will meet Full Sail University standards. When the project is complete, I will fully sign all legal rights to the song over to Full Sail for the school’s advertisement and educational purposes. Throughout my courses at Full Sail I will add each new learned skill set to the project. This will allow for an organic approach to the project’s evolution and completion. For supplies and expenses I will work within a small personal project budget of a couple hundred dollars. I’ll Include an art portfolio of graphics for digital and print use. I would like to use relatable class projects to sharpen this portion of the project. I am looking forward to using the school provided Adobe software suite to create the art portfolio. I will work with a final school legal liaison. Together we will ensure all legal trademarks and disclosures are written correctly and included on print and digital mediums. I will be vlogging to document the steps of my project and I will create and share a YouTube channel link to the project as well as post the video updates to my Mastery Journey. I will sign a binding agreement with Full Sail University and its Affiliates to not share, copy or distribute this material. I will transfer all rights to Full Sail and its affiliates. I would like to use knowledge gained from the legal classes in my course list to provide as much strength to this agreement as possible. I would also like to use library resources to research other necessities. I would like to use library resources to find templates for forms and documents. I will appropriately cite and give full credit for these resources. It would also bring notable recognition to my brand. https://youtu.be/UwwR4-idOcQA
Product Management Mastery Journal Post This course was greatly beneficial and exceeded my expectations. Being an artist manager was something that I once had an interest in. My interest stemmed from curiosities of all thing’s entertainment. I’m thankful to have a spirit that recognizes talent and isn’t envious. I have become an encourager of artists to the point that representing them professionally seemed like a natural progression. I’ve been blessed with great and talented individuals in my life that I’m privileged enough to call friends. Allen (2018) states that “managers are important to new artists who need help directing their budding careers.” That would be easy for me to do because I enjoy getting behind and supporting others when I see their talents. When I know another’s strengths and potential I can “express a vision that draws people to them and inspires them.” Unfortunately, one life only allows so much time, and my focus is currently on the production and law process (Allen, 2018, p. 201). Being a product manager appeals to my sense of entrepreneurship. Anything that I would like to create requires the knowledge of product management for the idea to come to full fruition. The things that I learned in this aspect of the class were invaluable. I am grateful for time spent in learning each section of the process. Haines (n.d.) relates that “Product managers, like entrepreneurs, should be knowledgeable and passionate about what they do. This passion is often rooted in the inherent challenge of competing and winning.” The most informative topic surrounding this module was that of the customer/user insight (Woods, 2020). Wherein we were challenged to “create a clear and compelling picture of your audience” …. This will serve as a fast-track reminder to everyone who is servicing them. Woods (2020) reminds us that by illuminating the most realistic evidential facts about our target audience we learn how to direct them. The psychological implications border on sinister behavior unless the content of the product or service has the customers best interest in mind. Many original sales gurus like Jeffrey Gitomer know that people buy based on their experience. He says, “Great salespeople are relationship builders who provide value and help their customers win."

The Entertainment Business Finance online class far exceeded my expectations. I was expecting a boring, dry, and heavy class that would be a drudgery. The opposite was true. The information that I learned was very interesting and the assignments were engaging. Being able to see the complex ratios at work gave me a huge boost of confidence. The amount of knowledge that came from this finance class was incredible. We looked at large entertainment companies and dealt with real numbers and facts. I was able to decide for myself whether these companies were “solvent, cash-flush, or carrying large debt.” It put things into perspective. Now, moving forward I will be able to personally and professionally apply this knowledge. Personally, I found great strategies for investing. Up until this point in life, I’ve just been dabbling in investing and insurance. Now I’m ready to make some more concrete decisions. I feel secure about investing in my future. Professionally I can see how the whole business process works. This class guided me through assignments that were structured. It also connected my business idea from beginning to end. I learned that there are many factors that play into creating and running a successful business. More than I thought and more than I’ve been applying to my current small business. After putting a pen to the numbers, I can now realistically predict whether my business plan is going to make money. Although nothing is guaranteed, this course also helps us look at what to do in projected low times in our running annual costs and revenues. This acted like built in safety measure. Taking the low points into consideration, I now can prepare adequately by “beefing up” my start-up costs. All in all, I must say that this course met objectives that I didn’t even know that I had. Full Sail has done it again with a top-notch performance by their professors who offered excellent lesson plans and high-quality lectures. Thank you for helping me feel like I’m walking into the next level of business, well done!
